An Evening with Heather: "Teenagers...whatever!"

Video Recording, Audio MP3 Recording, & Resources

Developmental Trauma and Teenagers
Raising a typical teenager is hard enough, but when you mix in the impact of developmental trauma to the equation, the challenges become exponentially more difficult. On one hand, you have a child who is developmentally becoming an adult. Yet on the other hand, you have a child who has not moved past being a toddler in many respects. Join Heather T. Forbes, LCSW for this webinar as she discusses effective parenting strategies for raising the "regressive child who is becoming an adult."

The Teenage Brain
Traditionally, it was believed that a child's brain was almost fully developed during the first few years of life. As it turns out and as many parents can atest to, the brain undergoes massive changes during the teenage years. Fortunately, in the last decade, neuroscience has focused more of its research in the area of the developing teenage brain. The conclusion is that the functioning, wiring, processing, and capacity of the teenage brain is very different from the adult brain. In this webinar, Heather will develop a deeper conversation around what science is telling us about our teens' brains. You'll finally have an answer to that question you find yourself continually asking, "What was he/she thinking?!"

Dealing with Teenage Specific Behaviors
Dealing with a defiant toddler is definitely different than dealing with a defiant teenager. Negative behaviors from our teens can push us to our screaming edge as well as put us into a constant state of worry for their safety and future outlook. This webinar will include several "real life" scenarios to give you insight on how to build a strong parent-child relationship with your teen while simultaneously setting appropriate boundaries. It is an art to do both without igniting your teenager "who knows it all" and to still maintain peace and love in your home. As a mother of two former teenagers, Heather draws not only on the brain science but on her own personal experience of raising two children severely impacted by trauma who are now 22 and 21 years old. It is possible!

Getting to the Root of It All
Long-term success will never come from grounding a teen or removing privileges...these will only create more of the same negativity. More importantly, for our trauma-impacted children, these punitive techniques will only undermine any gains that may have been made to improve their sense of self and love for self. Self-identity and self-acceptance are key factors that need to be addressed during this phase of a child's development. So many of our children believe deep down that they are unlovable, they don't fit in, they were a bad baby, they are the bad kid, and worse. Getting to the dark hole in their hearts where these false beliefs are stored is truly the answer to helping them reach their full potentials. Join Heather for this very important webinar to gain strategies that will put you in a much more effective position to be the best parent you can be for your teen!
